Every year a lot of films are made in the Hollywood film industry. Some of them are simply overestimated while others are unjustly underestimated. This story, “The village”, could be used as an example of how an original movie can be forgotten because of a lot of bad reviews. But believe me, I am not the only one person who loves it.
Nominated in 2004 for the best original soundtrack Oscar, it was directed and written by the “Sixth sense” director M. Night Shyamalan. “The village” tells the story of an isolated village whose dwellers believe there is a scary being in the forest who wants to hurt them. That´s why the inhabitants must live under one rule: nobody will cross the borders. Otherwise, the worst ending will come to them.
Set in the North American state of Delaware, it is played by a fabulous cast. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, a newcomer with a promising future; two times Oscar nominated Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, Gladiator), whose face personifies humility and Adrien Brody, who proves why he is at the peak of his career. The plot shows, as far as the acting goes, there is something poetic and even magical around all of these scenes.
What is most memorable about “The Village” is its moving music, which leads the cinemagoers to a striking 19th century aesthetic that will probably remind them of an Amish atmosphere. However, its main strength is its surprising and never predictable ending which gives sense to the whole movie and the role of the obedient blind girl, played by Bryce, who will break the rules in the name of love.
The film appeals to people who believe that the cinema with real meaning is not over. Spoiler: once you have watched it, try to compare the plot with the situation of some North American villages and with the way they behave.
